Saunier Duval’s Riccardo Ricco won Sunday’s second stage of the Giro d’Italia, after chasing down a late attack by Joachim Rodriguez. |
Liquigas’s Franco Pellizotti climbed into the lead of the 2008 Giro d’Italia, with a one-second advantage over American Christian Vande Velde of the Slipstream-Chipotle team.
Pellizotti and Ricco were part of a small pack that broke away after Rodriguez in the final uphill kilometer of the stage. The group finished with a small time gap ahead of Vande Velde.
Cefalu to Agrigente saw Vande Velde’s teammate David Zabriskie removed from the race in an ambulance about 60km from the finish.
There was no immediate word from the team on Zabriskie’s condition, although he was sitting up and conscious on the side of the road before being loaded into the ambulance.
Astana’s Alberto Contador, Italian Enrico Gasparotto and Austria’s Christian Pfannberger also were caught up in the crash but were able to rejoin the race.
