Sylvain Chavanel (Cofidis) broke away from the peloton at the midpoint of the 165.5 kilometer stage with fellow Frenchman Jérémy Roy (Française des Jeux). Riding his 8th Tour, Chavanel had the strength advantage over Roy, and out powered his younger companion in the two man sprint. After the finish of the 19th stage, Chavanel broke down in tears of joy for having finally been able to find Tour success. |

The route for the 2009 Tour of California was announced Wednesday by AEG Sports, promoters of the race, during the American broadcast of the Tour de France.
